About the alcohol calorie calculator

Alcohol is calorie-dense and invisible on most food labels. At seven calories per gram it sits just below pure fat and well above both protein and carbohydrate, and unlike them it provides no vitamins, minerals or amino acids — the definition of empty calories. A pint of ordinary beer is roughly 200 calories, a large glass of wine around 230, and a cocktail can easily pass 400 once mixers and sugar are counted.

The calculation splits into two parts: the alcohol itself and whatever else is in the glass. Pure alcohol contributes about 7 kcal per gram, and a US standard drink contains 14 grams — equivalent to a 12-ounce beer at 5 percent, a 5-ounce glass of wine at 12 percent, or a 1.5-ounce shot of 40 percent spirits. Everything else — beer's residual carbs, wine's sugar, a cocktail's juice and syrup — adds on top, which is why the mixed drink in this calculator carries an extra allowance.

Converting drinks into "standard drinks" is the more useful framing for health. Guidelines in most countries define low-risk drinking as no more than about 14 standard drinks a week, spread across the week, with several alcohol-free days, and never more than four in a single occasion. Those limits are about risk of harm, not weight, and they apply regardless of how the drinks are measured.

One clear warning: the calorie figure is not a reason to earn alcohol through exercise, and this is not a reason to drive. Alcohol calories are stored just like any other surplus, and drinking also tends to loosen dietary restraint in ways a calculator cannot capture. Moderate intake is the only pattern associated with anything like neutral risk, and for some people — pregnancy, certain medications, a history of dependence — the right number is zero.

This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it cannot replace an assessment by a qualified health professional. Individual results vary, and figures such as calorie needs, body-fat percentage and heart-rate zones are approximations based on population averages rather than measurements of you.
