About the child height predictor

A child's adult height is mostly written in their genes, and the simplest way to read them is the mid-parental method. Add the parents' heights together, add 13 centimetres if the child is a boy or subtract 13 centimetres if the child is a girl, then divide by two. The result is a statistical centre, not a prophecy: the same formula gives a range of roughly plus or minus eight and a half centimetres, and about two thirds of children end up inside it.

The second approach uses the child themselves. At any given age, a healthy child has typically reached a fairly predictable share of their final adult height — around 62 per cent at age five, 76 per cent at age ten, and 93 per cent at fifteen for boys. Divide the current height by that percentage and you get a projection. This method responds to how the individual child is actually growing, which is why blunting the two estimates together is often more useful than trusting either alone.

What the numbers cannot see matters as much as what they can. Nutrition, sleep, long-term illness and the timing of puberty all shift the outcome, sometimes by several centimetres, and children grow in bursts rather than on a smooth curve. A child who is currently short may simply be a late bloomer whose bone age lags their calendar age. Conversely, a child who is tall early can finish growing sooner.

Use this as a bit of fun and a rough guide. If you are genuinely concerned about your child's growth — for example if they are far below their peers, or crossing percentile lines downward — the right step is a paediatric appointment, where a doctor can measure growth over time and check bone age.
