About the cycling calories calculator
Cycling is one of the kindest ways to burn a serious number of calories. Because the bike carries your body weight, the joints in your knees, hips and ankles take far less pounding than they do running, which is why cycling is often the first choice for anyone returning from injury or carrying extra weight. The trade-off is that it takes longer: an hour on the bike at a conversational pace costs roughly what forty minutes of running does.
The calculation uses metabolic equivalents again. Cruising below sixteen kilometres an hour is about 4 METs, a steady nineteen to twenty-two is around 8, pushing hard to twenty-five climbs to about 10, and racing above twenty-five reaches 12 or more. The single biggest determinant of your calorie burn is not distance or even time — it is how hard you are actually pushing. Two riders out for ninety minutes can differ by a factor of three.
Wind and terrain distort this more than any other activity. A headwind can double the effort required for the same speed, and a long climb can turn a leisurely spin into an interval session. Speed-based tables therefore underestimate a hilly or windy ride badly. If you want accuracy, a power meter is the gold standard: watts translate directly into energy, and the conversion is close to one to one after accounting for the body's efficiency of roughly twenty to twenty-five per cent.
A practical caution, especially for indoor riding. Stationary bikes report calories generously, sometimes by a wide margin, and the numbers vary between machines. Cross-checking against your own heart rate and perceived effort is more useful than trusting the console. And remember that a hard hour on the bike earns you a decent meal, not a licence for a large one — cyclists often overestimate what they have burned and then eat it back several times over.
This calculator returns estimates for general information only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and it cannot replace an assessment by a qualified health professional. Individual results vary, and figures such as calorie needs, body-fat percentage and heart-rate zones are approximations based on population averages rather than measurements of you.
