About the walking calories calculator

Walking is the most underrated form of exercise, largely because it is easy enough that people dismiss it. Yet the energy cost adds up quickly in a way that matters over a week rather than an hour: a brisk hour a day, every day, is a substantial weekly expenditure, and it requires no equipment, no recovery and no learning curve.

The arithmetic follows the same metabolic equivalent logic as every other activity here, and the key variable is pace. A slow stroll is about 2.3 METs, an average walk around 3.5, and a genuinely brisk walk — the kind where you are slightly out of breath but can still hold a conversation — is about 4.3 to 5. Hiking with a loaded pack can exceed 6. Moving from a stroll to a brisk pace raises your burn by more than half without adding any time.

The popular "10,000 steps" target is a marketing artefact rather than a scientific threshold, but it happens to be a reasonable one because it is roughly equivalent to an hour of deliberate walking on top of your normal daily movement. Converting it into energy: a seventy-kilogram person walking briskly burns approximately the numbers shown above per ten thousand steps. Research in recent years has found that meaningful health benefits start well below that figure — several thousand steps a day is already associated with lower mortality — so if ten thousand feels daunting, walking more than you do now is the win.

One caveat about body weight: equations assume you are simply walking, so they underestimate when you are carrying a heavy load or pushing a pram uphill, and overestimate when you stop frequently. The other caveat is about compensation. People often eat back far more than they burn after a walk, and a "healthy" coffee and pastry can easily exceed an hour of walking. If weight management is the goal, the food side of the equation still deserves most of your attention.

Individual results vary, and figures such as calorie needs, body-fat percentage and heart-rate zones are approximations based on population averages rather than measurements of you.
